The Betsy Ross Flag

The Betsy Ross Flag

This flag represents a rustic wooden version of our nation’s first flag. According to popular legend, the first American Flag was made by Betsy Ross. Betsy Ross was a widow struggling to run her own upholstery business. In the summer of 1776 Betsy Ross is said to have received a visit from General George Washington regarding a design for the new nations flag. Washington and the Continental Congress had already come up with the basic layout for the flag, but Betsy allegedly finalized the design. George Washington had a six-point star, while Ross advocated for a five-point star because the cloth could be folded and cut out with a single snip. Historians have never been able to verify these events.
